Mount Elephant
Railway Quarry 1910/11
In the early 1900's about 1910/11 the Victorian Railways
opened a railway track to
Mount Elephant and started a Quarry on the North face of the mount.
This was to extract Scoria for use as ballast on the local
railway network, this turned out to be a short lived quarry as
the Scoria was to soft and soon broke up with the pressure
of the trains running over the lines.
The photo's from that time can be seen below,
A group of men who have been loading scoria for ballast into wagons with the steam engine.
